Hey there.

Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures travelling the world- hope you enjoy!

Dubai- The Perfect Destination for the Female Solo Traveller?

Dubai- The Perfect Destination for the Female Solo Traveller?

As someone who has come to enjoy my own company whilst travelling, I’ve had my fair share of solo trips. But when I announced I was heading to Dubai on my lonesome, reactions from friends and family were different than past adventures.

Specifically, I was told to be extra careful. But were these reactions valid?

In my opinion- no.

As Dubai is located in the Middle East, it is a city that often cops a bad rep in the media. However, it’s important to note that the tourism sector contributes majorly to Dubai’s economy, therefore it is a place aiming to be as attractive to tourists as possible. Walking the streets, it is evident that a large portion of people around are also tourists, and I felt very safe exploring alone.

A big question I was asked before my trip was “What are you able to wear in Dubai?” A common misconception is that you must be fully covered in order to avoid trouble in Dubai. Although you must be fully covered to enter mosques and other significant sites of religion, you will see all sorts of dress when walking around the Dubai Mall. Yes, there are many women wearing a full burqa. But there are also many strutting around in crop tops and mini shorts without an issue. My advice? Wear something that is cool and comfortable, without revealing too much skin if you’re not keen on copping too many stares.

Tales of an alcohol-free city and tough penalties on drinking within Dubai are often hot headline topics. As a tourist, however, drinking in licensed establishments is not actually a crime. Sure, I wasn’t running around the streets crazily intoxicated (like I may or may not have done in other cities…), but I also didn’t hold back on having a mojito or three at one of the spectacular beach clubs the city has to offer. A little respect to culture goes a long way, but you can certainly enjoy a few beverages as a tourist in Dubai.

Contrary to popular belief, I wholeheartedly believe that Dubai is the PERFECT destination for the solo female traveller. This unique city has so much to offer- from shopping up a storm at the incredible Dubai Mall, to learning about traditional Arabic culture in the middle of the desert, plus so much more. Every local that I spoke to were lovely, and so grateful for what tourism has brought to their city. By all means, have your wits about you! But I would definitely recommend considering Dubai for your next holiday or stopover destination.
